Dude DeWalt Cellars is a locally owned winery and the next installment for our Live Good, Live Local campaign. Kaitlin Powell was able to interview Trae Buchert about Dude DeWalt Cellars!

How did you choose the name Dude DeWalt Cellars?

Dude DeWalt is the historical name of the gulch we live on.  Clarence dude DeWalt was murdered by Lloyd Blaylock, very close to where our property now sets.   Supposedly, they had had a couple of girls with them one night while drinking next to our winery, then got in a fight over the girls.  Blaylock, who killed DeWalt, was acquitted.  However, the person who sold them the alcohol (from Star) was arrested and thrown in jail. It was in 1931, during the prohibition. The property we set on has been called Dude DeWalt gulch since this time. It is a small part of our Idaho history.

What has been the best thing about owning Dude DeWalt Cellars?

The people who come and the relationships that have been built.

What is the most popular item that you offer?

Our people.

Which Dude DeWalt experience do you recommend the most?

Enjoy the views and setting.

Are you currently working on any other business ventures?

We have a family rock, sand, and gravel business, premier aggregates, in the valley.   Our boys operate this business. We crush both rocks and grapes!

What has been the most rewarding part of owning Dude DeWalt Cellars?

Would have to say worship night, the first Thursday of every month.  We meet from 6-7, sing worship songs to our God, and have a great time in fellowship.

What is your favorite wine that you offer?

Right now would have to say our '19 merlot, big bold, American-style Bordeaux that we all like. Just my opinion (Trae)

Are there any special items or experiences that you would like to promote?

When people come to Dude DeWalt, it is a place to fellowship with other visitors and our staff.  People come before wine at Dude DeWalt cellars.
